Netiquette: The etiquette of cyberspace

Netiquette is a combination of the words network and etiquette. A network is a group of computers that can communicate with each other. Etiquette is a social code of behavior .So; netiquette is the social code of the internet.

Netiquette, like etiquette, provides rules for proper and professional behavior on the internet. Netiquette is the etiquette of cyberspace. In other words, Netiquette is a set of rules to make the Internet practice pleasant for everyone .Netiquette is an important thing in cyber space and not something that you can ignore.

There are some rules or code of ethics that everyone should follow while using the Internet.

Rule 1: Remember the human

Treat others as you would like to be treated. When you are communicating through emails, all you see is a computer screen. You don’t have the chance to use facial expressions, gestures, and tone of voice to communicate your meaning. You only have WORDS — lonely written words. So express yourself freely and explore strange new words.

Rule 2: No Flaming

Flaming is a form of verbal abuse when you purposely attack or disrespect somebody for any reason. If you didn’t agree with something they said, then there are many polite ways to share a different point of view without name calling or attacking someone. Just be pleasant and polite.

Rule 3: Respect other people’s time

People today seem to have less time than ever before. When you send email or post a blog, you are taking up other people’s time. It’s your responsibility to make sure that the time they spend reading your mail or posting is not wasted.

Rule 4: Make yourself look good online

Know what you are talking about and make sense .Give attention to the content of your writing. What you are talking about should be clear in your mind. Bad information spread like wildfire on the net. Apart from this, make sure your notes are clear and logical. This is most likely to take place when you’re trying to make an impression on someone by using long words that you don’t really understand yourself. No one will be impressed by that. It’s better to keep it simple.

Rule 5: Share expert knowledge

Sharing your knowledge is pleasure. And it makes the world a better place. Don’t be scared and hesitate to share what you know.

Rule 6: DON’T TYPE IN ALL CAPS

It hurts the eyes. It makes people think you are shouting at them. It is okay to type in caps to emphasize a word or two, but please don’t do it all the time.

Rule 7:Use Proper Grammar & Spelling

If u rite liek this lol ppl might start 2 get mad. 🙂

Sometimes spellings are not easy and basic spelling mistakes will happen. But if it’s distracting from your message, it can be irritating. So use the browser with built in spell check like Firefox 3.

The rules of Netiquette will help not only you but others also to have a much more enjoyable online experience. Internet is a large place to get lost in, and also a large place to get into problem. Make sure that your netiquette is up to the mark and no one has an opportunity to point a finger at you.
